How The Police Use MySpace To Investigate Crimes

This is just an intro to what will be a continuing discussion here on SocialMediaSchools.com, but the following video shows how what you post online could get your BUSTED!

Going back to the misconceptions many people have about the Internet and social media, the following video shows how the people that use social networking websites (such as Facebook and MySpace) are not always just kids.

In addition to parents, teachers, staff and school administrators using the Internet to puruse and interact with people online, the police are also using social media websites to scope out, investigate, and sometimes arrest people who are performing illegal activities.

You probably already knew that the police investigate offline crimes by using online media, but when it comes to our schools, what do you think about school administrators using social networking sites to police and prosecute their students for actions they’ve made on the Internet?

Is it right for schools to actively police their students online? If so, where is the line drawn between what the school is responsible for and what the child is responsible for posting in their own free time?

We’ll continue to discuss this over the months to come, but in the meantime, share your thoughts and ideas below in the comments section.
